spOOnMe

it's candle light time up on the Mesa. i realize i don't capitalize much. there's a smooth warm breeze tonight. unheard of...

this post was going to be about how more and more things in our lives talk to us. think about it. your Iphone, your cereal box, your laptop. much more than, say, a spoon or a wave. silence & skill.

77 / 77

Last century, 77 was the year I moved from New York City to Nice, France. I was seven. Now, I'm back in the States - California.

This track by the Slip is kind of an indie/redneck tune. But, somehow, the words speak straight to what's on my mind when I think of the years when I left NYC. Except for the vocals at 3'27'' that throw me off, it's a pretty damn good tune and the lyrics shake >> "Even though the race may never be won / I can lay like a dandy, get heavy in the sun".

popular mechanics

I finally nailed "MECHAŠ˜iX " under the street sign on Poplar Road. e-nunciation, not spelling. A tribute to an iconic magazine.

Flag sequence - Port Jervis, NY: GB(J)A

G.od B.less (J.obless) A.merica. Port Jervis never really felt like it was an economic beehive. But last month it looked like it had hit the bottom. Somehow, it's in these down and out, vacant towns that the flag seems to be flown the most - and always in the most random places.

Feel Like Paradise

Not a very assuming track at the beginning. Just a simple disco beat (but a damn good one). But then comes a nice surprise at the second half of the track - don't skip to it, just keep playing. The groove blends elegantly into a gem of Disco-Soul memorabilia.

Did you feel it coming? :) Who'd have guessed that's where the song was headed... Mashup at its best, and pithy lyrics of wundah! Courtesy of our friends at Leftside Wobble.

16-Astoria

Anyone who knew me when I was sixteen will recognize this jacket. "HW" is for Hot Wheels, my DJ moniker back then. I got the jacket in Astoria, Queens, just off 31st Ave and asked to have the letters sewn on to it. It was winter of '85 or '86 and the movie Krush Groove had just come out.

The Muir Woods patch came much later, obviously.

North & Dill. // Part 1: North Beach

Two days on the road, 4o miles north of Bolinas, sleeping in the Wagon. Day 1: Parking lot in North Beach (Point Reyes National Seashore). Day 2: Morning dew on the windows & Park Ranger taps at my window. Quick drive to check out South Beach, then the long haul to Dillon Beach.

Notice, in one of the shots, the "Pago Pago Yacht Club" (pink letters) T-shirt hanging on one of the rear seats. My dad used to wear it back in the late 80's - early 90's.

grew-some

A few days ago the three sheep at the farm were slaughtered. Once killed, they were wrapped in cloth and hung for 24 hours. At night, they stayed in spotlights and the radio played to keep mountain lions away. Byron stayed on the site in the trailer for the night. The whole sight was kind of spooky.

The rest of the activities involved a lot of cutting, chopping, grounding and sausage smoking*.

Pynchon McMuffin: seen in the background holding his breath

Phew. It's been 3 months since anything was posted on eYe-Marshall. If you've been visiting and seeing the same "sweet guantanamo" post and wondering what the heck's been going on... thanks for your patience! First, in January, my screen died out, then the entire laptop, then I moved out of my place - all of this wasn't too conducive to keeping eYe Marsh updated. I found a new home, a mile down the road* starting April 1st. So I still live in Bolinas, CA and until I move in I'm staying with the folks at RDI, a permaculture farm where Sarah works. I might also take a road or a hiking trip for a few days.

(click picture for slide show, then hit F11 for full screen)

*I also discovered an old semi-abandoned fisherman's cabin at the edge of the Mesa overlooking the ocean, a cool place to roll out a sleeping bag once in while.

Limantour and Tomales Bay (with my dad)

I have books I've been given, books I found at the free bookstore in Point Reyes, Buddhist books, plus The New Yorker, Mother Jones, Surfer's Journal... all in some state of reading...

My dad is here visiting for two weeks. Click pics below to see what came out of our trips up to Limantour and, a few days later, to Tomales Bay (then hit F11 for full screen).

Jus' Breathin' --- Great Transference (continued)

A few days around Dec. 31st, I was wandering in and out of the house, amazed by the sunlight and everything in it. There were chocolates, a pair of jeans, a sock, some books, veggies, a poem by Milarepa... and an odd novel by Kenneth Patchen. On Dec. 31st, Sarah and I drove down to Los Gatos - on the way, I took a picture of a highway overpass. Click the pic above to see s'more.

Just sitting...

... in my spot at sundown, on a road that might be "Mistle", near Brownell's cute little house. A few more funny faces came up, breaking some inner stillness.
